Introduction
There are 4 main types of fat, saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and trans-fat. All of these fats are found naturally in our diet, and although we need all fats in moderation for various functions within the body, it is the unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) that are widely known for their beneficial contribution to overall health.
It is for this reason that an Omega-3 fish oil has become one of the most popular nutrition health supplements in the world.
Features and Benefits of Fish Oils
Fish oil is without doubt, the best source of polyunsaturated fats available. The term ‘fish oil’ generally refers to two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in plant and animal foods such as salmon, vegetable oils and some nuts and seeds and, are found in abundance in fish and phytoplankton. However, the diet is often too low in these food groups, meaning the most effective and convenient way to consume EPA and DHA is via supplementation.
The EPA and DHA present in fish oil is known to promote brain health and development, especially in the formative years during childhood. These fatty acids have the capability to alter the lipid composition of cell membranes, impacting cellular metabolism, signal transduction, and regulating gene expression. We also know that fish oils play a significant part in the prevention and management of many long-term health conditions, largely due to their capacity to help reduce and manage inflammation.
Quality and Manufacturing
Fish Oil Supplements make for a super convenient way of consuming your polyunsaturated omega-3 and 6 fats. However, not all fish oil supplements are created equally, and poor-quality fish oils could do more harm than good.
Quality assurance is a must, so it is imperative that people source their fish oil supplements from only the most reputable and transparent companies so that you know exactly what the supplement contains and how it was produced.
Independent studies from Canada, New Zealand, Norway and South Africa to name a few, have discovered that many omega-3 supplements exceed acceptable oxidation limits, meaning they could be detrimental to health. The New Zealand study showed just 3 of 32 fish oil supplements contained quantities of EPA and DHA that were equal or higher than labelled content. Oxidation markers exceeded recommended levels with only 8% of supplements meeting international recommendations for all fish oil quality markers.
When selecting your Fish Oil supplement, it is important to consider the company’s manufacturing, storage and delivery practice. Even the smallest of discrepancies in these areas can result in a compromised supplement, and this applies to fish oils more than any other supplement out there.
If a fish oil isn’t refrigerated and/or is exposed to UV light and oxygen due to poor manufacturing and storage, the fish oil you receive and consume is likely to have lipid peroxidation (degraded oil). Degraded fish oils aren’t easy to spot and can be bad for health.
Our DY Nutrition Omega-3 soft gel delivers a potent and clinically significant 330mg of EPA & 220mg of DHA, as well as 2mg of Vitamin E to limit lipid peroxidation, as well as contributing to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It is manufactured and kept to the highest standards in order to represent our continuing commitment to ISO: 9001 standards.
Our DY Nutrition Omega-3 softgel is compatible with Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and the council on the provision of food information to consumers.
Basically, we perform several tests to ensure the integrity of our fish oil, that ultimately support the validity and efficacy of both raw materials and finished product.
Dosing
The current evidence supports a dietary recommendation of approximately 500 mg per day of EPA and DHA combined, this is also the case for cardiovascular disease risk reduction.
For those that don’t eat oily fish, the recommended consumption is just 2 softgels per day to provide 2000mg of Fish Oil, equating to a potent 660mg EPA and 440mg DHA (1000mg combined). In the case of existing cardiovascular disease, at least 1000mg of EPA and DHA is recommended (8).
A serving of DY Nutrition – Omega 3 soft gel sits in line with population recommendations for optimal intakes of EPA and DHA, meaning you will get what you need from one serving a day. Simple.
NOTE: There is evidence showing an intake of more than 3000mg EPA+DHA might cause adverse effects on the immune system or blood clotting (9). It is important to not exceed recommended dosages.
